“The Online Course Development for Japanese 131, Japanese Conversation and Culture I/ Business and Tourism Industry”
The Online Course Development for Japanese 131, Japanese Conversation and Culture I/Business and Tourism Industry, challenged the instructor with a big fear of technology, to develop an interactive, 100% online course. This generated innovations in technology, interdisciplinary and community team building involving KCC’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Technology, Honda International Center, international and local students, former students, faculty, administrators, and members of the local and international community. The most outstanding aspect of this project is hope for this innovation to become a role integrating technology with humanity.

11:30 ~ 11:40 Break
11:40 ~ 12:20 Session 3 Lorenzo Wyatt, "Aloha Challenge"
“Aloha Challenge : Japanese-English immersion curriculum”
This workshop introduces Aloha Challenge, the online, plus immersion curriculum created by Symbilingo (formerly E-BUKATSU, Inc.). Using ACTFL-OPI assessment at both entrance and exit, 8 of 12 Japanese and American high school students increased one proficiency level in just 24 days.
This immersion is created by matching Japanese with Americans into one-to-one, same-gender language partnerships. The partnerships are combined into 4-member teams that compete against 2 other teams in a 4-round contest. Teams participated in 12 experiential learning activities hosted by some of Hawaii's premier cultural institutions and companies. At their activities, teams produced and published films and blogs - in English and Japanese - under tight deadlines.
