Activities for IC1: Lesson 12 |
|
| A game for learning names of Chinese dishes |
| Name the Dish: The teacher prepares 10-20 pictures of Chinese dishes and teach the students how to say their names. The class is then divided into two teams. The teacher shows one picture at a time to the class to see which team can say more names of the dishes. (For a description of this game see Let's Play Games in Chinese, pp. 45-46.) |
| A restaurant game |
| Who is the Best Waiter/Waitress? The teachers prepares 10-20 pictures of Chinese dishes and put them on a table which serves as the kitchen. The teacher divides the class into groups of 5 students. One student will play the waiter/waitress, and the others will play customers. Each of the customers orders a dish. The waiter/waitress goes to the table (kitchen), finds the pictures of the dishes ordered, and brings them out. Each group must order drinks and dishes. (For a description of this game see Let's Play Games in Chinese, pp. 112-114.) |
| Allergies |
| (This is based on an activity in Cynthia Ning's Communicating in Chinese [Teacher's Activity Book]). The teacher prepares slips of paper on which are written dietary restrictions. For example: "You hate fish, you think tofu is disgusting, and you are allergic to dishes with wheat noodles." Each member of a group of three, four, or five students is given a unique set of dietary restrictions. The group is then instructed to get ready to order a Chinese meal with four dishes, a soup, a starch, and drinks. Members have to find dishes that can all agree on. If the teacher plans the activity in advance, carefully composing the restrictions and using a set menu, the activity can be constructed so that there is only one possible solution. Alternatively, the activity can be open-ended (no one single correct answer). For ideas, see Communicating in Chinese (Teacher's Activity Book). |
