The Modern Chinese Literary Essay - Defining The Chinese Self in the 20th Century

An international conference with participants from the US, Germany, Great Britain, the PRC, Taiwan, and Hong Kong on the nature, role, and significance of the modern and contemporary Chinese essay (sanwen, suibi, xiaopinwen, etc.). The panels cover a broad range of topics such as the essay and modernity, urban culture, ideology, and contemporary literary trends, as well as the discussion of individual essayists and forms like the letter and the travel note. Conference languages: English and Chinese.
