Director of the Institute for Global Chinese Affairs
The University of Maryland, College Park, the flagship institution within the University System of Maryland, invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Institute for Global Chinese Affairs, a unit that promotes programs, exchanges, and other activities between University faculty and academic units and similar institutions throughout the Chinese-speaking world. The Director of the Institute reports to the Director of International Programs and has considerable delegated authority in overseeing activities of the Institute.
The University of Maryland has a long history of interaction with its Chinese counterparts and is noted for the breadth of faculty expertise on China-related issues and the many successful programs it has conducted throughout the Chinese-speaking world. The University enjoys the support of a large constituency of alumni throughout this geographical region. University-sponsored research and projects span a wide range of interests including public policy, economic issues, agricultural development, and information technology. The successful candidate will be expected to provide vision and dynamic leadership in strengthening these ties, cultivating new ones, and promoting understanding with the Chinese-speaking world. Responsibilities include facilitating and coordinating China-related activities initiated by faculty from across the University; increasing the level of China-related educational and scholarly programs at the University by stimulating faculty initiatives and interaction among faculty and members of the international Chinese community; and working with the Office of University Relations to increase fundraising for support of China-related program initiatives and faculty endowments in China-related areas. The Director will be expected to build on and strengthen ties with alumni and friends and work with the deans of the colleges and the alumni office in appropriate outreach efforts. The Director will be expected to work with faculty and administration in defining both long- and short-range goals and strategic missions for the Institute. This should include plans for fundraising, development of relationships with China and obtaining a better understanding of Chinese related activities on campus.
The Director will be expected to lead the University in taking full advantage of our unique location in close proximity to the nation's capital, with its many diplomats and foreign policy experts in China-related matters.
Qualifications: A record of several years of successful program development in areas related to China, demonstrated administrative experience, and demonstrated success in fundraising. Candidates should have a record of scholarly achievement that would ordinarily justify appointment in one of the University's academic units.
