Penn Summer Chinese Institute

June and July, 2001

The Penn (University of Pennsylvania) Chinese Teachers Summer Institute will hold its fourth annual program in June and July of this year. Beginning as a response to the demands of Chinese language teachers in the greater Philadelphia area, its high quality and success has since attracted students nationwide. The Institute aims at providing native speakers of Chinese with the pedagogical training necessary for obtaining foreign language teacher certification in their home states. In most states, the Institute courses meet partial requirements for teacher certification.

Three separate week-long (five day) courses will be offered this summer; successful completion of a course earns one EDCE (Graduate School of Education) continuing education credit per course, with one EDCE credit being equivalent to three credit units from most other universities or colleges.

Course 1: Selected Topics in the Teaching of Chinese Language and Culture -- 6/25-29

Course 2: Second Language Acquisition -- 7/5-9

Course 3: Chinese Applied Linguistics -- 7/11-15

The tuition for each course is $950 on or before May 31, or $1000 after that deadline.
