Southeast Conference on Chinese Language Teaching: Chinese Language and Culture in Second Language Acquisition (2002)

CALL FOR PAPERS

Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are co-sponsoring a Southeast Conference on Chinese Language Teaching. The theme of the conference is Chinese language and Culture in Second Language Acquisition.

DATE: September 28, 2002.

PLACE: Duke University, Durham, North Carolina

This is the first conference of its kind held in the southeastern region of the US. The main objective is to promote the exchange of knowledge in the field of Chinese language teaching and to discuss related issues such as learner and institutional characteristics and curriculum design. It is also our hope to start a series of conferences or forums, probably annually, to facilitate and promote Chinese language teaching in this area.

ABSTRACT

Submissions are invited for 20-minute oral presentations on a topic in one of the following areas: (There will be time for discussion after the presentation.)

the relation of language, literature and culture in the design of Chinese language courses
the use of technology in Chinese language teaching
the role of study abroad in China and the curriculum design of the study abroad programs
pedagogical approaches in classroom teaching
the design of programs, courses, textbooks, and visual aids to meet the needs of students

Please send an abstract of 200-250 words by email attachment to BOTH Carolyn Lee and Wendan Li (See below for their addresses), also send a hard copy of the same abstract to one of them. With the abstract, please include your name, title, institution, e-mail and postal address as well as the phone and fax numbers.

Deadline for abstract: May 10, 2002

Notification of acceptance: June 1, 2002

Deadline for the full paper: September 2, 2002

Language: The abstract, presentation and the paper can be in either Chinese or English.

If your abstract or paper is written with a Chinese software other than Windows 2000 and Office 2000 in PC, please send a hard copy to Prof. Carolyn Lee.

REGISTRATION and OTHER EXPENSES

There will be no registration fee. But please let us know by September 5 if you are coming. We need the information to make various arrangements. Presenters at the conference will be reimbursed for lodging and transportation (up to$250/person).
