Applications are invited for a lectureship in Chinese Language and Modern Chinese Literature. The successful applicant will make a substantial contribution to the teaching of Modern Standard Chinese to students with and without prior knowledge of Chinese, as well as offering intermediate, advanced and honours units of study on twentieth-century (including contemporary) literature using texts in the original Chinese. Further duties will include research, appropriate administrative service (including coordination duties as required) and supervision of honours and research postgraduate theses. The successful applicant may be asked to offer one or more units of study taught in English in the School's Asian Studies program and/or to contribute to the first-year program for fully character-literate native speakers of Chinese.

Minimum qualifications are: native- or near-native speaker fluency in Modern Standard Chinese (putonghua, Mandarin); excellent command of English; a PhD in Chinese literature preferably of the twentieth century (candidates whose completed theses are under examination may apply); evidence of research potential in Chinese literature beyond the PhD; experience of teaching Modern Standard Chinese; and evidence of ability to provide high-quality undergraduate and honours or coursework postgraduate teaching in twentieth-century (including contemporary) Chinese literature. While there is a strong preference for candidates whose PhDs are in modern Chinese literature, outstanding candidates with PhDs in Chinese literature of earlier periods may also be considered provided that they can demonstrate ability to teach at a high level in the areas specified above. Preference may be given to candidates with PhDs specifically in recent (post-Mao) or contemporary literature. Experience of teaching Chinese literature to native speakers of Chinese, and/or ability to teach classical Chinese literature may be an advantage.

Applicants are asked to send ONE 30-40 pages sample of their research writing in English with their applications. Only one copy is needed.
