Introduction
Is Chinese a difficult language? The answer is "yes" and "no". Chinese has no verbal tenses, no distinction between singular and plural nouns, no conjugations, no genders, and no subjunctive mood. However, Chinese has characters and tones, which are quite different from many other languages. It is a common case that Chinese study takes more time than other language studies. Is it possible to overcome these difficulties in Chinese study so that the learning process can be accelerated?
Following the last year's great success, Hubei University and Baruch College, CUNY, as well as a group of supporting universities, are jointly initiating another major international Chinese pedagogical conference in Yichang, Hubei, P. R. China. Yichang is a nice city offering a good climate and environment for international conferences and it is also close to a mysterious yet beautiful area, Shennong Jia.
The general themes of the conference focus on Chinese characters, writing and other difficult issues. Our ultimate goals are to promote Chinese language education and to increase the communication channels among Chinese language teaching professionals. Chinese teachers from many parts of the world will attend the meeting; therefore, the conference will provide attendees excellent opportunities to meet colleagues from other parts of the world. During and after the meeting there will be tour activities. The research papers will be collected for formal publication.
