2002 Princeton Conference on Chinese Language Instruction
Beijing, China
October 9, 2001
Dear Colleague,
For the past nine years, the East Asian Studies Program at Princeton University has sponsored an annual conference on Chinese language instruction; during that time we have witnessed immense growth in the field. One of the strongest examples of that growth is the Princeton in Beijing intensive summer language program, which is co-run by Princeton University and Beijing Normal University. In commemoration of the tenth year of the program, the two universities will co-sponsor the conference in Beijing on June 15-16, 2002. We would like to take this opportunity to invite our colleagues from the United States to this conference, which will be held on the campus of Beijing Normal University.
As in previous years, a committee will be formed to review proposals for presentation at the conference. Proposals for the following topics will be reviewed for presentation:
Chinese phonology, syntax, and semantics |
The teaching of Chinese characters |
Textbook preparation and compilation |
Chinese language pedagogy in general |
Other topics related to materials and pedagogy, including computer-assisted instruction |
Please be prepared to share your comments, suggestions, and observations with us. We would appreciate it if you could prepare a two-page outline for a fifteen-minute presentation on one of the above topics or a topic of your choice. The paper presentation may be either in Chinese or English. Please send outlines postmarked by January 15, 2002. Upon receiving your outlines, we will organize related topics into panels. Formal invitation letters and notification of acceptance of proposals will be sent out in January, 2002.
Our financial resources are limited. For participants who present papers, the East Asian Studies Program of Princeton University will provide the following financial assistance:
Conference registration fees |
Room and board during the conference |
International transportation costs: up to $300 of the ticket price or half of the ticket price, whichever is less. |
We realize this is not sufficient to cover the actual cost, but we hope you will secure additional funds from your home institution.
Please return the reply form (click here) to us by January 15, 2002. You are welcome to photocopy this letter and the reply form for your colleagues. If you have any questions, please contact Joanne Chiang by email (chiang@princeton.edu) or phone (609-258-2945).
Thank you. We look forward to seeing you.
Sincerely,
Chih-ping Chou Professor, East Asian Studies
