Chinese Language and Humanities

The Curriculum in Asian Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks to appoint a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Chinese Language and Humanities. Ph.D. in Chinese or a related field is expected by time of appointment. The Curriculum is particularly interested in candidates whose work 1) bridges the existing divide between the 19th century and the 20th century; or 2) uses an interdisciplinary and thematic approach to popular culture, the mass media, visual art, and/or gender issues; or 3) takes an inter-ethnic or trans-regional perspective towards the relations between the Han and ethnic minorities or among national and regional entities in the Chinese-speaking world. Evidence of outstanding scholarly promise and effective teaching credentials are required. The successful candidate must have the interest and ability to teach Chinese language courses at all levels as well as courses in Chinese Studies. Native or near-native fluency in both Mandarin and English is required. All applications must be postmarked no later than November 15, 2002.
