Conference on Chinese Language Instruction

April 29, 2000

The East Asian Studies Program at Princeton University will sponsor a conference on Chinese language instruction on Saturday, April 29, 2000, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The focus of this year’s conference will be "A Critical Assessment of the Current Trends in Chinese Language Instruction." Topics will include:

1) The Limits of Technology. How effective is computer-assisted instruction in actual teaching?

2) Oral Proficiency Interviews. To what extent do such interviews improve the quality of instruction?

3) Classroom Activities. What kinds of classroom activities are most effective?

4) Language and Culture. Are we teaching too much culture in a language class?

In addition to these main topics, we will also consider papers on the following subjects:

--Development of Materials

--Error Correction

--Overseas Chinese programs

--The application of linguistics theory to Chinese language teaching

Please prepare a two-page outline, either in Chinese or English, for a ten-to-fifteen minute presentation on one of the above topics or a topic of your choice. Please send outlines postmarked by February 1, 2000.

We will be able to reimburse participants who present papers with partial transportation. Due to a limited budget, we are able to sponsor only one person per institution. Food will be provided on Saturday for all participants.
