DIRECTOR, JOHN FISHER ZEIDMAN CHINESE STUDIES PROGRAM

Sidwell Friends School—a co-educational, PK-12, Quaker day school—seeks applicants for the position of Director of the John Fisher Zeidman Chinese Studies Program. Established in 1983, the Chinese Studies Program is one of the oldest high school programs in the United States offering Chinese language, history, and culture. The Program’s components include Asian History courses taught by the Director, a four-year language sequence in Mandarin-dialect Chinese taught by faculty with a dual appointment in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, a student exchange program with Chinese schools, and an endowed annual lecture. Qualifications include: 1) A distinguished record teaching courses on the history of traditional and contemporary China. Teaching competence in Japanese and Korean history is strongly preferred as well; 2) Strong human relations skills and the ability to supervise two students from China each year in an exchange program that involves home-stays; 3) Proficiency in the spoken and written Chinese language; 4) Demonstrated administrative ability and a sensitivity to development concerns; 5) Experience dealing with diplomatic and political constituencies relating to China; 6) Ability to maintain and expand a specialized library collection of monographs, periodicals, and resource files on China. 7) Ability to supervise, jointly with the Modern and Classical Languages Chair, the Chinese language teachers.
