20012002 Annual Fellowships for Advanced Research in Chinese Studies
The Harvard-Yenching Institute and the School for Overseas Education of Peking University, assisted by the Center for Chinese Studies (CCS) at the University of Hawaii, is pleased to announce the 20012002 annual fellowships for U.S. students wishing to conduct advanced study or research in China in Chinese studies.
Period of award: September 1, 2001, to June 30, 2002.
Award covers:
1) tuition
2) room (public telephone, shared bathroom) in foreign students dorm on the
Peking University campus;
3) monthly stipend in renminbi;
4) faculty adviser;
5) access to Peking University library (Asiaıs largest university library) and
computer facilities;
6) roundtrip airfare from home city to Beijing
Applicant minimum requirements:
1) U.S. citizen (exceptions may be made);
2) doctoral student at an accredited U.S. institution;
3) field of study in an area of Chinese studies, e.g., Chinese linguistics,
literature, history, philosophy, economy, law, education, etc.;
4) sufficient level of ability in Chinese language to conduct research in China.
Supporting materials (required of all applicants):
1) completed application form;
2) official academic transcripts of undergraduate and graduate school
coursework;
3) three letters of recommendation from professors knowledgeable about the work
of the applicant, of which one must be from the applicantıs PhD adviser;
letters should be sent directly to CCS;
4) a relatively detailed (but no longer than 2 pages) proposal of the research
plan to be pursued at Peking University;
5) evidence of the applicantıs level of ability in Chinese language (e.g.,
standardized test scores; proficiency rating; letter from Chinese language
instructor).
