CHINESE AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

HEAD OF SCHOOL, JULY 2001

San Francisco, California

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: URGENT

The Chinese American International School Board of Trustees is seeking an inspirational and experienced educational leader who will preserve and enhance the essential character and mission of the school, and who will sensitively and energetically lead the school community toward the realization of its great potential. The Chinese American International School (CAIS) is the nation's only full time PK-8 school offering instruction in English and Mandarin Chinese as equal languages in all subjects. Over 90% of CAIS students speak English as their first language and learn Mandarin through an immersion program. Founded in 1981, the school is nearing its planned enrollment of 400 students and shares a spacious and newly renovated campus with the French American International School in the Civic Center area of San Francisco. It is fully accredited by WASC and the California Association of Independent Schools. CAIS graduates continue their education at some of the most prestigious schools in the Bay Area. The uniqueness and significance of the school's mission make this an exceptionally compelling and exciting opportunity for an experienced and culturally astute leader.

Although it will not be a requirement that the new head of school speak Mandarin Chinese, fluency in or familiarity with the language are highly desirable attributes, as is experience living and working in Asia. Because this search is late in getting underway, candidates should send materials ASAP. Although the application deadline is February 7, a review of candidate materials may be accelerated if there is a timing problem. The compensation package is competitive and within the norms of comparable independent schools in the California Bay Area.

A detailed Candidate Information Document will be available in early January 2001. In the meantime, please visit the website at www.cie-cais.org.

Candidates should submit:

Cover letter explaining why they are interested in and qualified for the position.
Current resume.
Personal statement.
Three reference letters, plus names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of five additional references.
