Gao Xingjian, Winner
of 2000 Nobel Prize for Literature,
Will be reading from his novel Soul Mountain, and
Interviewed by Dr. Chung-wen Shih, GWU,
At the National Press Club Ballroom, Washington, DC
Thursday, Feb. 22, 7 p.m. Open to the public.
Tickets available at Olsson's Books.

The interview, to last from 40 minutes to an hour, will be in Chinese, and translated into English, with no restrictions on topics. Taking advantage of Mr. Gao’s extraordinary literary talents, Dr. Shih expects the questions to focus on Gao’s life and writings, mainly Lingshan and his modern-style plays, and to avoid politics. If the interview goes well, she will offer a complete text to our Journal. If it doesn’t go well, we shall forget it, she says.

If you have questions to suggest to C. W. Shih for posing to Gao, she will appreciate it. (Questions better be faxed to her in Chinese, 202-333-2762).

She also wants to call to your attention to the following 2 helpful sites:

1. "www.nobel.se" which includes Gao's 35-minute long Nobel speech, delivered on 12/7/00--in video with excellent sound and image, and also in print, in both English and Chinese.

2. "www.white-collar.net" which has 42 of Gao Xingjian's unabridged works and works about him (all in Chinese)—including the 500+ page Lingshan.
