This book promises to make speaking and understanding Chinese
comparatively easy for English-speaking learners. After outlining the sound system of
Chinese, the book introduces basic sentence patterns and key vocabulary through a variety
of practical, true-to-life conversational situations. Topics include discussions about
family members and pets, jobs and salary, sightseeing, letter writing, exercise and
health, and Beijing (Peking) Opera performances. The books final chapter introduces
written characters. Practice exercises with answers, supplementary bilingual vocabulary
