The Inter-University Programs for

Chinese language Studies (IUP)

The Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies (I.U.P., formerly also known as the "Stanford Center") has extended its deadline for applications for academic year 1999-2000 at its center in Tsinghua University, Beijing, to April 15. Candidates will be notified by May 1. Some fellowship money is also available. In light of the late deadline, applicants may opt to submit a written essay in Chinese (minimum 1000 characters, unedited by a teacher) in lieu of taking the Chinese Proficiency Test (CPT, which entails a $25 test fee). Applicants who opt out of taking the CPT should add a $25 Essay Reader fee to the normal application fee.

The Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies at Tsinghua is now the primary program sponsored by the Inter-University Board, and the only one operated under the direct oversight of a Field Director, currently Prof. Vivian Ling. Prof. Ling, Field Director of the former IUP-Taipei in 1994-1997, launched IUP-Tsinghua in 1997, very much after the model of the former IUP-Taipei. Thus, IUP-Tsinghua has inherited the best aspects of the IUP tradition built over three decades.

For information on the program, see our web page at http://ieas.berkeley.edu/iub/ or email the Program’s Administrative Office at UC Berkeley: iub@socrates.berkeley.edu. If the URL given above doesn’t come up, shorten it to http://ieas.berkeley.edu and click the Programs button, then IUB.
