SCHOLARSHIPS
Zhonghua Scholarship Program (ZSP) 1999 (Please note change of address and contact information from previous years!)INTRODUCTION: Established by WCCEC and educational institutions in China in 1995, the ZHONGHUA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (ZSP) is designed for native speakers of English who want to learn more about the Oriental Culture, to study Chinese and to gain some experience in teaching EFL. Some proficiency in Chinese is preferred by not required. ZSP participants depart for China in late August each year and return to the U.S. in mid-July the following year.
BENEFITS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Every ZSP participant is provided with all travel expenses (round trip) from the U.S. departure point (cities on the West Coast) to the host school in China, minor medical insurance, accommodation, and a monthly stipend of 2000 RMB Yuan (more than the salary of a full professor at the university in China). The ZSP has a one-to-one Personal Tutorial System that aims at increasing communicative competence in Chinese (8 hrs/wk study time), an English teaching component (about 12-14 hrs/wk to K-12 students) and a paid cultural tour at the end of the program. There is also a paid winter vocation around the Chinese New Year.
EXPENSES AND ORIENTATION: There is a $50 application fee for all applicants (non-refundable) and a $500 fee for the finalists to defray cost related to the Orientation. Accommodation and training materials are provided for all participants during the orientation. All ZSP participants are required to attend this one-week Orientation before going to their own host schools.
