Chinese Language Summer Study Abroad Program

Hainan University, China

May 22 to July 21, 2000

The Chinese Language Summer Study Abroad Program at Hainan University, sponsored by University of Hawaii at Manoa Study Abroad Center, will host levels 2, 3, and 4 of intensive study for 9 weeks in Mandarin. Classes will begin on May 22 and will terminate on July 21, 2000. Students earn 8 semester credits.

  Students will live in a recently renovated, air-conditioned dorm designated specifically for foreign students. In addition to formal classes every morning, individual one on one tutoring sessions are arranged in the afternoon. Evening lectures on various aspects of Chinese culture and weekly Tai Chi lessons are expected to be offered at no extra cost. Four fields trips, one of which is a four-night study tour of Beijing, are also an important part of the study abroad program.

  Although the final cost has not yet been finalized, it is expected to be under $4000. This figure includes roundtrip airfare from Hawaii, tuition, dorm, field trips, and lunch 5 days a week. Application deadline is February 15, 2000. For further information please contact:

Exchange Programs in China 2000-2001

Fudan University, Shanghai

Through the International Cultural Exchange School (ICES), the University of Massachusetts/Amherst offers both semester and academic year programs focusing on Chinese language and culture. Courses are offered in intermediate to advanced Chinese language, Chinese literature and electives such as history and economics. All courses are taught in Chinese by the faculty of Fudan University.

Summer Program

The focus of this program is Chinese language (conversation and writing). Courses are intensive, and offered at the Intermediate and Advanced levels. Courses are taught by the staff of ICES and run for period of eight weeks.
