Integrated Chinese

Flash'em

Welcome to "Flash'em for Integrated Chinese ", the computer flashcard program for Professor Ted Tao-chung Yao and Yuehua Liu's Integrated Chinese .

Requirements

In order to use these files you must have Apple's Chinese Language Kit (CLK) installed on your Macintosh computer. This database is designed to be used with Dan Crevier's Flash'em, a computer flashcard program which has proven to be quite versatile and very functional for our purposes. You also need to drop the pinyin font, called Rich's PinYin Fonts (131k), into your font folder before starting the application.

The package contains the Flash'em 1.0 program, the Rich's PinYin-Sans.tt font (used to show the pronunciations in the second field), separate files for each lesson, and composite files for Lessons 1-5 and 1-11.
The first field should be set to Apple LiSung Light, the traditional Chinese font installed with the CLK.
The second field should be set to Rich's PinYin for the pinyin romanizations.
The third field should be set to Palatino.

If the information in any of the fields does not show properly, check the font settings for the fields. The fonts of all of these fields can be reset under the Options menu. However, except for the third field which is only for English definitions, I would advise against doing so. The first field must be one of the traditional fonts. Additionally, if you have any third party (i.e., non-CLK) traditional Chinese fonts, they should work too.

As for the second field, any font other than one of Rich's will not work as they are designed with a specific code not shared by other fonts. (There are three pinyin fonts designed by Rich Dellinger, but I chose to only include this particular one to maintain visual consistency with the textbook.) If you reassign a different font to this field (i.e., something other than Rich's) you will get strange characters instead of proper pinyin.

As I said above, the third field can be changed to whichever font you prefer to read on your Macintosh screen. I would suggest either Palatino, New York, Times, or some similar font.

Flash'em 1.0 is freeware, which means it can be distributed to whomever wishes to use it, including all of your students, without special permission from the author. Rich's PinYin fonts are shareware (he's only asking for ten bucks, a better deal could not be had).

Attention Teachers!

Last year I was fortunate enough to earn a teaching assistantship and am subsequently assisting Professor Ted Tao-chung Yao in teaching first- and second-year Chinese. In addition to my lecturing responsibilities, I also grade the homework and keep the grades. During one of my net-surfing sessions, I discovered a little tool that has made keeping grades a snap, freeing up a great deal of time that is currrently more precious than gold. Included here is the HyperCard stack that I use. It is called The Interactive Gradebook .

System requirements:
Macintosh System 6.0.5 or above, and HyperCard v2.x.

Personal Note:
I should note that I did not create the stack. It was written by Mr. Ben Seaberry, who provides exhaustive instructions on how to use the stack in his own "Read Me First" stack. The stack is freeware, I just wanted to contribute a little something that I have found extremely useful. If you have any further questions about the use of this stack, please feel free to contact me.

This is a small part of a larger project in development which aims at providing materials and communication via the internet for teachers and students using the Integrated Chinese textbook series.

Good luck and I hope this proves useful. If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an email.
